CITY OF MERCED SET TO LAUNCH RED-LIGHT CAMERA SAFETY PROGRAM
Cameras aimed at curbing reckless driving and preventing crashes

Merced, Calif. (Friday, April 18, 2025) — The City of Merced is launching a new automated traffic safety program designed to change driver behavior, reduce reckless speeding, and make streets safer for everyone.

Two red-light cameras have been installed at the intersection of 16th Street and R Street, monitoring both eastbound and westbound traffic.

The program includes a 30-day warning period before citations are issued for red-light violations. Any vehicle captured running a red light or turning right without coming to a complete stop will receive a citation. The warning period begins the week of April 21, 2025, with citations beginning 30 days later.

The City has partnered with Verra Mobility, a national leader in traffic safety technology, to administer the program. The system captures images and video of violations, which are then reviewed and verified by law enforcement before a citation is issued.

“These cameras have been shown to reduce crashes and serious injuries,” said Merced Police Chief Steven Stanfield. “Our goal is to deter dangerous driving behavior and make Merced’s streets safer for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.”
